Tip 1: What is your dream job?
When choosing the right major, ask yourself, “What is my dream job?” If you know what your dream job is (it’s okay if you do not know yet) then you need to choose the major that will best prepare you for that specific career. You also need to take into consideration how much coursework is required for your major. Does your career path require graduate school? Are you prepared to graduate from college and go on to graduate school? These are important questions you need to ask yourself when deciding on a major. There are a lot of majors that prepare you for a range of careers, is it up to you to pick a career path that you enjoy.
Tip 2: What are you interested in?
Instead of trying to find what your passionate about, make it easy on yourself and start with what interests you. It takes time to develop a passion for something. If you are interested in what you are studying, you are more likely to be fully engaged in your classes and perform better academically. Who doesn’t want better grades? If you are not sure what you want to major in, take some courses that appeal to you and then decide what you enjoyed learning about the most.
Do not major in something that you are not going to enjoy doing for the rest of your life. College is a financial investment in yourself so take some time to think about what you would like to spend four years learning about.
Tip 3: How much schooling are you prepared to commit to?
You’re probably reading this and thinking, “graduate school? I don’t even know what I want to major in yet.” That is completely normal. If you have no desire to continue on to graduate school, choose a major that can support the lifestyle you want. If you want to continue on to graduate school, choose a major that fulfills your prerequisites.
